Semax is a synthetic heptapeptide derived from a fragment of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH 4-10), modified to resist rapid enzymatic breakdown while retaining none of ACTH's hormonal activity on the adrenal glands. Research interest centres on its proposed influence on brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) expression, which is the basis for its study in cognition, focus and neuroprotection models. It is commonly studied alongside Selank, a structurally unrelated peptide examined for complementary stress-response pathways.
