Nothing goes into stock on a supplier's word alone. Each batch is tested and comes with a Certificate of Analysis that you can read before you order, not after it arrives.
Two tests do the work, and they answer different questions. It's worth knowing which is which, because plenty of suppliers publish only one.
Reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography separates a sample into its individual components and measures each one as a percentage of the total.
That tells you how much of the vial is the intended material and how much is something else — typically incomplete chains left over from synthesis. Research-grade material is generally 98% or better.
Liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry measures molecular mass, which confirms what the material actually is.
This is the test people forget to look for. A sample can be extremely pure and still be the wrong molecule — purity testing alone cannot tell the difference, because it measures proportion, not identity. A certificate covering only purity leaves the more important question unanswered.
If a supplier can't show you a certificate tied to a specific batch, you're relying on a claim rather than a result.
