What KPV actually is

KPV is a tripeptide made of three amino acids — lysine, proline and valine (Lys-Pro-Val, which is where the name comes from). It's the C-terminal fragment of α-MSH (alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone), a larger signalling peptide. In other words, KPV is the small "business end" of a bigger molecule — researchers isolated the shortest piece that still carries the activity they were interested in.

Because it's so short, KPV is stable, easy to work with, and doesn't carry the pigment-related activity of the full α-MSH molecule — which is exactly why it's studied on its own rather than as part of the parent peptide.
