What is KPV?
KPV is a short three-amino-acid peptide (lysine-proline-valine) from the C-terminal sequence of α-MSH, studied in cellular research.
At three amino acids it is the shortest compound in this range — the name is simply the single-letter codes for its three residues: K (lysine), P (proline), V (valine). There is nothing else to it. No cyclic ring, no fatty-acid chain, no stability tail. It is about as structurally simple as a functional peptide gets.
Its origin is the interesting part. α-MSH — alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone — is a thirteen-amino-acid hormone best known in the melanocortin system, the same family that Melanotan II and PT-141 belong to. KPV is the final three residues of that sequence. But unlike its melanocortin relatives, it is not studied for receptor-binding activity in the pigmentation pathway. The research interest concerns a different property of the fragment entirely, which is why it sits in a separate category on this site despite sharing a parent molecule.
That's the recurring theme in fragment research: cutting a hormone into pieces doesn't produce three weaker copies of the whole. Different fragments carry different properties, and a fragment can end up in a research field the parent hormone was never associated with.
