What are research peptides?

Peptides are short chains of amino acids — smaller than proteins — that occur throughout biology and are synthesised for study. "Research peptides" are supplied strictly for laboratory and in-vitro research use. They are not manufactured, labelled, or sold for human or veterinary consumption. Most are supplied as a lyophilised (freeze-dried) powder, which is stable and easy to store and transport.

The line between a peptide and a protein is conventional rather than absolute: chains of roughly 50 amino acids or fewer are generally called peptides, longer ones proteins. What matters more in practice is that peptides are large, folded molecules held in shape by relatively fragile bonds. That shape is what determines which receptor a peptide binds, which is why handling matters so much — heat, agitation and freeze–thaw cycles can unfold the molecule and render it inert without changing anything you can see in the vial.

How research peptides are made — and why purity varies

Almost all research peptides are produced by solid-phase peptide synthesis. The chain is built one amino acid at a time on a solid resin support: each residue is coupled, the protecting group is removed, and the cycle repeats. When the sequence is complete the chain is cleaved from the resin and purified, usually by preparative HPLC.

The reason quality varies so widely between suppliers is baked into that process. Each coupling step is efficient but not perfect, so a small percentage of chains at every cycle fail to extend. Over a 30- or 40-residue sequence those failures accumulate into truncated chains that are chemically similar to the target and therefore difficult to separate out. How aggressively a manufacturer purifies the crude product — and how honestly they test it afterwards — is the difference between 99% material and 90% material that looks identical to the eye.

This is also why identity testing matters separately from purity. A batch can be genuinely pure and still be the wrong molecule, if the synthesis was run to a different sequence or the vial was mislabelled downstream. Purity tells you how much of one thing is in the vial; identity tells you what that thing is. A certificate covering only the first leaves the more consequential question unanswered.

Storage & handling

Lyophilised peptides should be stored at −20°C, sealed and out of light. To use them they're reconstituted with bacteriostatic water — added slowly down the side of the vial, never shaken. The points that actually determine whether material survives its working life:

  • Before reconstitution. Freeze-dried powder is stable and forgiving. At −20°C and out of light it keeps long-term, and it tolerates refrigeration and short periods at room temperature in transit — which is why research peptides ship without cold chain and arrive intact.
  • Choice of diluent. Bacteriostatic water contains 0.9% benzyl alcohol, a preservative that suppresses bacterial growth and allows a vial to be drawn from repeatedly over weeks. Sterile water contains no preservative and is single-use.
  • Technique. Run the diluent slowly down the inside wall of the vial rather than injecting it onto the powder cake, then swirl gently until dissolved. Never shake — foaming means the molecule is being mechanically denatured.
  • After reconstitution. Refrigerate at 2–8°C, generally good for around four weeks. Never refreeze: ice crystals forming through a freeze–thaw cycle physically damage peptide structure.
  • Stability beats convenience. Store vials in their box, towards the back of the fridge rather than the door — repeated warming and cooling does more harm than one steady temperature.

Reconstitution and working out concentration

A common point of confusion is that the vial does not have a concentration until you create one. A 10mg vial is simply 10mg of powder; what determines the concentration is how much diluent you add. Add 1mL of bacteriostatic water and you have 10mg/mL. Add 2mL and you have 5mg/mL from exactly the same vial.

Because of that, draw volumes are a two-step calculation: establish the concentration from vial size divided by diluent volume, then divide the amount required by that concentration to get the volume to draw. Insulin syringes are graduated in units rather than millilitres — 100 units to 1mL on a standard U-100 syringe — which adds a third conversion and is where most arithmetic errors creep in. The legal & research-use framing

Reputable suppliers keep everything in that lane: they describe what a compound is and the research areas it's studied in, never what it does to a person. That framing isn't just marketing — it's what keeps research supply legitimate.

The framework behind this is the Therapeutic Goods Act, which governs how goods intended for therapeutic use are advertised and supplied in Australia. Compounds that have not been evaluated and entered on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods cannot be advertised for therapeutic purposes, and prescription-only substances cannot be advertised to the public at all. A supplier making claims about outcomes in people is not being more helpful than one that doesn't — it is operating outside that framework, which is a reasonable signal about how it runs the rest of its business.

How do I know a supplier's peptides are what they claim?

What's the difference between purity testing and identity testing?
RP-HPLC measures what proportion of the sample is a single component. LC-MS measures molecular mass and confirms which component that is. A pure sample of the wrong peptide passes the first test and fails the second.

Do research peptides need cold-chain shipping?
